NPCF carried out a review into the use of part-time timetables after parent carers raised concerns about reduced timetables, limited oversight and the impact on children, young people and families.
Background
In 2023 growing numbers of parents began reaching out to Nottinghamshire Parent Carer forum to share their concerns about their children being placed on part-time timetables. These conversations seem to indicate a growing use of reduced timetables, coupled with limited oversight and a lack of accessible information specifically for parents.
This feedback highlighted the need for a deeper understanding of the issue.
To better understand this, NPCF carried out a year-long review to explore the process, highlight the experiences of families and children affected by part-time timetables, and identify areas for improvement.
How we carried out the review
To understand the issue more fully, NPCF used a range of approaches, including:
1. Semi-Structured Interviews
Interviews were carried out with schools, parents, carers and young people to capture different perspectives and experiences.
2. Parent and Carer Survey
A survey was shared with parents and carers of children who were currently, or had previously been, on a part-time timetable.
3. Local Authority Data
Data provided by the local authority was reviewed to help understand the wider picture.
4. Policy and Guidance Review
Relevant policies and guidance were reviewed to understand the broader context.
Insights and Findings
Extensive and valuable information was gathered through this process, with participants generously sharing their time and experiences.
This helped NPCF better understand how part-time timetables were being used, how families were experiencing them, and where clearer information, oversight or support may be needed.
The Report
The report highlights the key findings from the review and sets out recommendations aimed at improving the management of part-time timetables and better supporting children and families.
The findings and recommendations have been shared with key figures at the local authority.
NPCF will continue to push for action so that this work leads to meaningful improvements for children, young people and families.
